Calligraphy

Fourth Tuesday of the month
Venue: Members Home

We are a small, friendly group of enthusiasts, who meet on the fourth Tuesday of each month (between 2-4pm) in members homes, to learn the "art" of beautiful writing known as Calligraphy.

As beginners, we start by mastering the basic strokes, curves, loops, and ovals, that make up the letters of the many alphabets we have available to us.

Calligraphy has existed for centuries, so we look at modern ways of writing, as well as reviewing the more orthodox Roman and Gothic styles, as used often in history.

By means of reference books, exercises, and drills, which we practise regularly in group, members are encouraged to develop their own styles of letter-writing, improve creativity, and develop any ideas they might have, for projects to share in future.

Additional use of templates, art cards, and collages, in group, is designed to encourage ideas, and (with practice in their own time) members are enabled to improve the fluency of hand and wrist movements, which all good calligraphers need.      We definitely believe that "Practice Makes Progress".

Calligraphy is always done slowly and deliberately, to obtain the best possible results.    No-one is pressured to do anything in group, apart from their own personal best, and (otherwise) take every opportunity to relax and stay calm, have fun, and enjoy making friends with like-minded people.
